During Memorial Day weekend Dance Fever Charlotte owners Holly & Jason Cagle captained the National Shag Dance Team to a 1st place finish at the USA Grand Nationals! The National Shag Team competed in the “team division” against dance teams from all over the world. The National Shag Team performed a shag dance routine while their competitors performed swing, cabaret, and other dance forms. Some of their competitors had traveled all the way from Paris to compete! This year’s National Shag Dance Team included three members of the Dance Fever Charlotte family – Holly Cagle, Jason Cagle, and Krystal Bravo. Other team members were Nikki Kontoulas, Jeff Hargett, Mandy Holt, Geoff Burdick, Kaitlyn Ellis, Brady Ellis, and Casey Cooper.

On May 7th Dance Fever Charlotte finished its 2009-10 dance school year with a recital production at Halton Theatre on the campus of CPCC Charlotte. This year’s recital consisted of two separate shows – the Pre Show featuring our preschool classes and the main show titled “Fame” featuring the rest of our 300+ student body. Halton Theatre provided a stunning venue which was filled to capacity with parents and grandparents who came to see the results of their kid’s year of dance classes. One of the highlights of the dance recital each year is the “senior tribute” – the last song of the night pays tribute to our graduating seniors. This year Dance Fever says a sad farewell to Cally Brenton who will be attending NC State University next year. Cally has been with us since we opened and is a long-time member of our competition team.

On May 15th Myrtle Beach, SC welcomed the world as it unveiled the new Boardwalk. The Boardwalk runs along the ocean and provides beach visitors a beautiful walkway between the ocean and the countless shops and restaurants. As part of the grand opening and ribbon cutting, the National Shag Dance Team gave a special performance along with Buddy the “Cake Boss” and singing groups Ben E King, The Coasters, and the Zodiacs. Dance Fever Charlotte was well represented with studio owners Holly & Jason Cagle captaining the National Team and Dance Fever alumni Krystal Bravo dancing as a team member.

On March 27th, the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual black tie ICE Awards. The ICE awards recognize local businesses for “industry customer excellence” in customer service. This year’s ice awards were held at the Palace Theatre at Broadway at the Beach. Holly & Jason Cagle, owners of Dance Fever Charlotte, were asked to perform as members of the National Shag Dance Team. The National Shag Team shared the stage that night with Le Grand Cirque and The Spirit of Ireland.

On Saturday March 28th Dance Fever’s senior & petite competition teams attended the On Stage America Dance Competition in Hickory North Carolina. This was the 2nd contest of the year for our dance teams and they put in an amazing performance which received 9 platinum awards (the highest) including two HIGH platinums.

Dance Fever Charlotte’s petite & senior competition dance teams competed on March 20-21st in Winston-Salem at the Encore DCS Dance Competition. This was the first competition that our 2009-10 teams have attended and they had a wonderful first showing.

The 2010 National Shag Dance Championships were held last weekend in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Shag Nationals is the longest running shag dance contest in the USA featuring dancers aged 10 to 70 from Virginia through Georgia. Read the rest of this entry »

Last weekend a shag dance contest was held in Greensboro, NC at Thirstys2. Despite the bad weather, a good crowd turned out to compete both nights. There were actually two different dance contests on each night.

Dance Fever 2009 graduate Kelby Faw is currently a Freshman at Western Carolina University where she is a member of the WCU Dance Team. Recently she earned a solo spot for the “Tik Tok” routine. You can see a YouTube video of the dance performance at the following link:
