Results of Thirstys Shag Contest

February 10th, 2010

Last weekend a shag dance contest was held in Greensboro, NC at Thirstys2.  Despite the bad weather, a good crowd turned out to compete both nights.  There were actually two different dance contests on each night.

Friday night was the “Keeper of the Dance” qualifying contest.  Each year, the Shag Hall of Fame at North Myrtle Beach along with the Keeper of the Dance board inducts one male and one female into the “Keeper of the Dance”.  The qualifications for this honor are (1) former junior shag dancer, (2) over 25 years of age, and (3) still actively dance and promote the shag.  Along with the annual induction, there is a series of shag dance contests which culminate in a final contest the weekend of the induction.

Congratulations to Krystal Bravo & Michael Bravo, students of Dance Fever Charlotte, who both placed in the top 3 on Friday night.  Their placement means that they will get to compete in the finals to be held at Fat Harolds in North Myrtle Beach on February 20th.  For more information on the Keepers of the Dance visit www.keepersofthedance.com

On Saturday night a “mixed doubles” contest was held in honor of the late Beth Mitchell.  Beth was a junior shagger who was tragically killed in a tornado in 1998.  A scholarship was founded in her honor which annually goes to a junior shagger to help with college.  The Satuday night contest helped to raise money for the scholarship fund.  Dance Fever Charlotte was well represented on Friday night as well with Kaylee Bravo, Michael Bravo, and Krystal Bravo all competing in the junior division of the contest.  For more information on the Beth Mitchell Scholarship visit www.shagnationals.com

Tap Dance History…

November 11th, 2009

With so many tap dancers making the cut this year on the hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance we thought it was time to take a moment and remind our students of some of the great tappers & hoofers who paved the way for today’s generation of tap dancers.

Many dance students today can’t name any pioneers of tap with the exception of perhaps Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly.  At Dance Fever Charlotte, students are greeted when they walk out of our dance classes in Charlotte with pictures of the Nicholas Brothers, Gregory Hines, and Saveon Glover hanging on the wall in front of them.  These photos serve as a reminder of the rich dance history of the United States.

Luckily, today’s technology gives dance students unprecedented access to video clips of the tap greats right on their own home computers.  Below are some of our favorite tap dance pioneers along with a link to Youtube videos of them live in action.
