Monday, February 21st, 2011

Last weekend was the annual “Keeper of the Dance” shag dance contest at North Myrtle Beach which included the Dewey Kennedy Memorial Scholarship award.   This shag dance contest featured three qualifying rounds – two in late 2010 and the final qualifying round last Friday night.  Couples who qualified got to come back last Saturday night and compete in the overall contest.  Dancers were divided into three divisions including:  Open, Junior, and Senior.

Dance Fever Charlotte was proud to have a current student competing in the junior division as well as one of our former students receive the college scholarship.  Sisters Kaylee & Krystal Bravo both danced in the junior division of the contest.  Krystal won 2nd place overall in the junior division.  Click on the following links to watch their dances:

So, what does the name “Keepers of the Dance” mean?  The Keepers Of The Dance was started in 1998 by the Shaggers Hall Of Fame to honor former junior shaggers who have continued to participate in our dance, music, and lifestyle after their junior years and have been instrumental in “keeping” the dance and music alive.  This organization has grown and flourished over the past 13 years.  Each year in March, the “keepers” committee meets and select a male and female to be inducted in October along with the Hall Of Fame Inductions.  In February of the following year each new inductee’s picture and biography are hung with the past inductees in “Keepers Corner” now located in Fat Harolds Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach.  Dance Fever Charlotte owner Jason Cagle is an inductee into the Keepers of the Dance – for more info including biographies of those who have been inducted click on the following link: http://keepersofthedance.com/default.aspx

Preliminaries to the Nationals

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

The prelims of the National Shag Dance Championships were held on January 28-29 in Myrtle Beach. (www.shagnationals.com)  Ten dancers in the Non-Pro Division competed to “make the cut” and dance at finals in March.

In addition to the shag dancers competing for a shot at the finals, there were also two special charity fundraiser contests during the weekend.  Friday night featured the annual “Shagging with the Stars” contest where 12 local & national celebrities competed with Pro shag partners.  Congratulations to this year’s female winner – Julie Kopnicky with partner Jason Cagle of Dance Fever Charlotte!  Special thanks to movie star Tyrone Power for making the trip from Hollywood to dance with Holly Cagle, owner of Dance Fever, in the charity event.  Click the following link from the Sun News to read an interview with Tyrone:  http://www.thesunnews.com/2011/01/24/1939284/shag-star-paying-visit.html

On Saturday night Dance Fever Charlotte was also well represented at the charity event – the first annual “Collegiate Shag” competition featuring six undergraduate couples representing six different colleges.  Amanda Britton, alumni of Dance Fever and current instructor, competed by representing UNC Charlotte.  Cally Brenton, alumni of Dance Fever, competed by representing NC State.  Congratulations to this year’s finalists – College of Charleston (1st place); NC State (2nd place); and East Carolina University (3rd place).  Click the following link for an article that appeared in the Sun News about our Collegiate Contest:   http://www.thesunnews.com/2011/01/30/1951536/students-hope-to-revive-shag.html
