With so many tap dancers making the cut this year on the hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance we thought it was time to take a moment and remind our students of some of the great tappers & hoofers who paved the way for today’s generation of tap dancers.
Many dance students today can’t name any pioneers of tap with the exception of perhaps Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly. At Dance Fever Charlotte, students are greeted when they walk out of our dance classes in Charlotte with pictures of the Nicholas Brothers, Gregory Hines, and Saveon Glover hanging on the wall in front of them. These photos serve as a reminder of the rich dance history of the United States.
Luckily, today’s technology gives dance students unprecedented access to video clips of the tap greats right on their own home computers. Below are some of our favorite tap dance pioneers along with a link to Youtube videos of them live in action.

We had three ladies who took dance classes at Dance Fever Charlotte graduate in May 2009 and leave us for college. A lot of you were familiar with them because in addition to taking dance classes at Dance Fever Charlotte they also served as teacher’s assistants and vital helpers around the studio. Here is a quick update on what they are doing now as well as what other grads of dance classes at Dance Fever Charlotte over the past few years are doing:
Class of 2009:
Emily Beam – was one of our students’ favorite teacher assistants during dance classes at Dance Fever Charlotte and is now a Freshman at East Carolina University. She recently changed majors from nursing to elementary education with a minor in dance. Her heart is in teaching young people and hopes to be a kindergarten teacher after graduation and teach pre-school dance during the summers.
Kelby Faw – was a member of our award-winning competition team and is now a Freshman at Western Carolina University. She tried out and was chosen as a member of the WCU Catamounts Dance Team where she performs at games as well as local events including parades. She is looking forward to dancing with the team at the upcoming WCU homecoming. While not dancing & studying, she has an entrepreneurial spirit with her latest project creating & selling T-shirts.

Dance classes at Dance Fever Charlotte kicked off with the start of our fifth season on September 7th, 2009. Our dance school year runs from September through May with this season’s year end dance recital performance being held on May 7th, 2010 at Halton Theatre on the downtown Charlotte campus of CPCC.
This year’s dance classes at Dance Fever Charlotte are bigger and better than ever! In addition to our popular 60 minute pre-school dance classes (Pre-Dance I & II) and 90 minute Kindergarten combination dance classes (Ballet-Tap-HipHop), we have a full dance curriculum for older students that includes ballet, pointe, tap, hip hop, cheer dance, acro, and tumbling. New this year is our combined Wednesday competition classes where we have overlapped the Petite Competition Dance Team and the Senior Competition Dance Team which will allow us to choreograph bigger production routines including the “Fame” routine currently in the works. We still offer our popular adult hip hop and adult tap classes on Monday nights. In addition, this year we have added adult bellydance classes on Monday and Thursday nights.
